Job Details: – High School Diploma or equivalent Required.
Summary: Evaluates, codes and monitors physician’s professional coding of operative reports, evaluation and management (E&M) and other CPT-4 procedural codes for accuracy. Interprets and analyzes OP report and medical record documentation. Applies correct coding principles as defined by regulatory agencies and standards of ethical coding. Job Responsibilities: Reviews, interprets and verifies evaluation and management (E&M) and other CPT-4 procedural codes according to the physician’s documented progress notes and orders loaded in the medical record. Ensures correct coding principles are followed and codes operative reports. Utilizes ICD-9 CM coding books, 3M and/or encoder to accurately code diagnoses based on the physician’s documented diagnosis. Identifies and codes global services and/or appropriate concurrent services according to coding guidelines. Identifies unbundled and bundled services/procedures and applies correct modifiers. Other duties as assigned. Education: Specific training related to CPT procedural coding and ICD-9-CM diagnostic coding through continuing education programs/seminars and/or community college. Working knowledge of human anatomy and physiology, disease processes and demonstrated knowledge of medical terminology.
Experience: One year recent experience in the section of ICD-9-CM and CPT codes based on interpretation of clinical data from medical records or equivalent related experience. Associates Degree in HIM with RHIT certification may substitute for above work experience.
Licensure/Certification/Registration: One of the following coding certifications: Certified Professional Coder (CPC), Certified Coding Specialist Physicain (CCSP), Registered Health Information Technologist (RHIT), Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA), Certified Coding Associate (CCA) through American Health Information Management Certification (AHIMA).
Physical Requirements: Prolonged sitting and/or traveling through various locations in the hospital and dexterity to accurately operate a data entry/PC keyboard. Manual dexterity required to locate and lift medical charts. Ability to work under stress and to meet imposed deadlines.
